Recipe in Ottolenghi’s Plenty. The black pepper definitely has a back-of-throat kick! Added some spinach cos I had it lying around, and served with sesame udon.

Top tofu tip: soak out excess moisture with kitchen paper then dust with cornflour before frying for crispy goodness. The cornflour also helps thicken up the sauce, making a yummy sticky glaze.
Japanese stew with potato and deep-fried tofu. This time I added green beans for crunch and colour, and some seven-spice for a kick.

A quick dinner - the sauce looks yucky but tastes nice! Sake, sugar and miso paste.
